AI Automation vs Traditional Automation

The two are not competitors. Choosing the wrong one for a step is what makes automation projects fail.

Traditional automation is deterministic. Given the same input it produces the same output, every time, and you can reason about it completely. That is exactly what you want for payments, scheduling and anything with a compliance trail.

AI automation is probabilistic. It handles input that has no fixed shape — an email, a scanned invoice, a support message — and produces a best interpretation. That is what you want where rules would need hundreds of branches.

Real processes need both. The mistake is using a model where a rule would be exact, or writing four hundred rules for a task a model handles in one step. We map a process step by step and assign each one to the right mechanism.

The other half of the answer is measurement. Deterministic steps are verified by tests. Probabilistic steps need an evaluation set and an accepted error rate, with a review path for everything below the threshold.
