How AI Agents Are Changing Business Automation
Agents do not replace workflow automation. They extend it into the steps that were previously left to people because the input was messy.

Most automation projects stall at the same point. The predictable steps get automated quickly, and then the process hits a step that requires reading something, interpreting it and deciding where it goes. That step gets handed back to a person, and the automation becomes partial.
Agents change where that boundary sits. A well-scoped agent can read an unstructured message, decide which of six categories it belongs to, pull the related record and draft the next action. It does not need to be capable of everything; it needs to be capable of one step that was previously manual.
The engineering discipline is in the constraints. An agent with unrestricted tools is unpredictable. An agent with three typed tools, a confidence threshold and a review queue is a system you can operate. We design the tool surface first and the prompt second.
The practical starting point is the step your team complains about most: high volume, low ambiguity, easy to measure. Automate that, measure the time recovered, then extend.
